Our journalist and copywriter, Dom Smith appeared in the Independent on Sunday (April 28th, 2013) as one of the national newspaper’s happiest people in the UK for 2013. The list collected 100 people who are noted for volunteering, mentoring and other selfless efforts. Cool huh?

Of the list inclusion, Dom says: “It’s a great pleasure, you know? To be included in something like that. That’s not just local, it’s national; and to be a part of such an inspiring list, it’s just brilliant.”

Dom is currently working on Soundsphere magazine’s third issue, and concentrating on new projects for The Creative Condition and Disabled Entrepreneurs.

Above is a picture of Dom looking really happy about everything…

Below is evidence that this actually happened…

An exciting event is taking place this Friday, as the Basingstoke-based disability travel publication, Accessible Britain have helped a reviewer for their website take to the skies as part of an Aerobility trial flight on. The flight by Steve Wilkinson will take place on Friday, April 19 at 11am at Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire.

The prize was donated by Aerobility as a reward for the best review sent in to info@accessiblebritain.co.uk. The destination website has become a new and exciting forum for the disabled community to share positive experiences of accessible places throughout the UK.

Accessible Britain founder Stewart White’s own passions for beating back a challenge fuelled the competition idea: “I had a trial flight with Aerobility in 2009, and enjoyed it so much that I knew that it would be a perfect prize to award. As a disabled person, I felt empowered again and would never of thought about undertaking such an activity!”

Stewart adds on that he needs as much support as he can get for his website, and so when writers like Steve Wilkinson contribute work (in this case it was Steve’s review of St George’s Hotel in Llandudno that won him the opportunity to fly), it really helps. He says: “It is the first of many competitions that we hope to award. So send in reviews!

“People can support the flight by registering on www.accessiblebritain.co.uk and reviewing any accessible place, hotel, holiday or extreme activity in Britain; for example, a country park, a sports centre, a tandem skydive, UK holiday destination or even your favourite place to go out for a coffee! We need your reviews! Visit the site and get involved.”

Accessible Britain’s vision is to create a community of like-minded people to share information about the accessibility of public places, venues, locations and transport interchanges. The audience, many of whom face the daily challenge of disability, will be given the facility to share experiences and opinions. To report beyond the “wheelchair” symbol and help others find the best places to go based on actual user experience.

The research om this was carried out by Qubit, a customer data platform; they looked at over 100m visits on 90 leading retail sites. Figures showed that those using Explorer to browse and shop were the most likely to go through and purchase an item.

The findings made from December 2012 to January 2013 captured Christmas and sale shoppers and showed that Internet Explorer users not only had the highest conversion rate at 3.14 percent, but also the highest average customer value at £2.42 per visit. How about that? Furthermore whilst other browser users have a higher basket value Firefox users average basket was £110.99 and Safari £108.44, Internet Explorer users have a higher chance of converting making them the most valued of all customers.

Interesting stuff! Any thoughts?

Accessible Britain is a new and exciting destination website that help people living with disability enjoy fuller and more active lifestyles.

Established by Stewart White, from Basingstoke.

As a former college tutor, Stewart is an excellent people-person with heaps of passion and drive. With Accessible Britain, Stewart now wants to create a one-stop guide for hotels, and places to visit that are suitable for disabled people. “Our aim is to become the destination website for the disabled community as well as their families and carers in the UK seeking to read and share genuine experiential opinions of venues, locations, stations and experiences throughout the UK.”

Stewart had always been very active, playing football and various sports. After becoming a wheelchair user, he began to re-evaluate his life and how he approached it, in order to grasp at the best experiences. “For me, it was working out how I could use four wheels and where, and there’s nothing worse than going somewhere and finding out you can’t get in! I was inspired to start this venture originally, after I went to the Isle of Wight on holiday in 2012 and the hotel I stayed in’s idea of disabled access was two planks of wood!”

When discussing what he wants out of those interested in writing for Accessible Britain (because it’ll only be as big as all the people involved!), editor Stewart says that he’s not interested in 100 per cent perfect writing, just real and honest experiences that other dedicated users can comment on, and relate to: “I want to hear from other people that have had good and bad experiences in hotels, in places they’ve eaten, and even on trains when it comes to accessibility!”

It is hoped that, in a similar fashion to the Michelin Star system, Accessible Britain’s reviews will eventually become a well-respected mark of honour for businesses within the travel and tourism industry. “I want Accessible Britain to be the first place that disabled people will go to for information on places, wherever they are coming from.”

For more information visit: http://www.accessiblebritain.co.uk and contact Stewart: info@accessiblebritain.co.uk if you’re interested in contributing to the website as a writer.

Mike Leigh Cooper and Jonathan Sillence have recently finished working on an exciting video promotional project for The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) with an aim to make people aware of how valuable maths can be as a skill. The video starred both Mike and Jay (Jonathan) walking around the streets of Manchester asking the public a diverse range of maths questions to test them. Some people were more happy to answer than others, of course.

How are you with maths?

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) is an independent charity which promotes adult learning across England and Wales. Through its research, development, publications, events, outreach and advocacy activity, NIACE works to improve the quality and breadth of opportunities available for all adults so they can benefit from learning throughout their lives.

Mike says: “It was great to re-learn some of the skills I hadn’t used for a while! We had a lot of fun working on this one.”

To find out how these tricks are done go to http://www.maths4us.org/answers!

Our Dom (sporting a rather huge beard) has been working as part of newly-formed York-based production company (alongside York St John University graduates Andy Law, Lauren Russell and other talented Film & TV graduates), Mella Productions, to film a series of promotional videos for York Mind examining different topics surrounding mental health issues that effect York’s community and service users.

Dom is the presenter, and he conducted the interviews for the series. He says: “It was an absolute pleasure to work with the people involved in these vids! I’m proud to have been asked, and to work as part of this team to support such a great organisation!”

More videos will be released over the coming weeks!

This first episode examines the issue of combatting stigma.

Mike Leigh Cooper (pictured) has just finished work on a promotional video for the 28th Jorvik Viking Festival (2013). Mike was tasked with (on behalf of TCC client, Partners PR) constructing an interesting and fluid production looking at the well-established festival’s events and what it has to offer the general public and visitors to the city of York. The voice-over for the video was provided by Definitive Media (the company started by local broadcast legend Chris Marsden)! Check it out below for more information.

The 28th annual JORVIK Viking Festival, February 2013 from The Partners Group on Vimeo.

More than 40,000 people descended on the historic city of York this past month (February) to celebrate the Jorvik Viking Festival and encounter more than 400 Vikings as they returned to the place they once called home.

This year’s fest, organised by York Archaeological Trust, celebrated the Trust’s 40th anniversary and the vikings that once ruled the city. The week-long festival combined an entertaining mix of combat, academic, archaeological and historical events, culminating in a spectacular battle and fireworks finale.

The video is released just as Yorkshire County Cricket Club‘s one-day team have now re-branded themselves as Yorkshire Vikings.

For more information visit the official Jorvik website.
